Lost a Sale Last evening, I drove myself and my partner through Toronto traffic from downtown TO to Yorkdale Toyota at the tail end of the evening rush hour to bu Last evening, I drove myself and my partner through Toronto traffic from downtown TO to Yorkdale Toyota at the tail end of the evening rush hour to buy a car. A car with the power-train and trim package I didn’t think I’d find within my time parameters. I had already resigned myself to buy a lessor model from another closer, more Toyota dealership, but at the last minute, I found an ad for exactly the car I wanted at Yorkdale Toyota. I jokingly mentioned it to my amazing salesman at the competing dealership where I was test-driving a car for the second time. And his reaction? “Let me do a little research on this other car for you. It’s important that you get the car you want, and that it truly is a good buy” It turned out that the car at Yorkdale Toyota was likely to be a better fit for us: Same year and model, same trim package, but with the power train option that I had originally wanted. Reluctantly, he bade me goodbye, and congratulated me on my (hopefully) new purchase. Off to Yorkdale Toyota we went. I had made an appointment with a salesperson at Yorkdale Toyotato see this car, and was promptly met by my new agent. This is where everything went south. He offered a test-drive, and I accepted. He then asked for my driver’s license, which I provided. He then asked to take it away to be photo-copied. I respectfully declined. I told him he could visually confirm that my license was valid (as it has been done at several other dealerships). He could make a note of my drivers license number and plate of the car that I drove in on. He had my phone number confirmed, as we had had a conversation on the phone already. In this day of heightened awareness of identity theft, there is no shortage of security experts warning of the dangers of being separated from one’s government-issued documents, and who should be allowed to take them away and copy them. I can’t think of any benefit to me or the car dealer by allowing them to make a replica of my drivers license nor was one explained to me. However, according to Yorkdale Toyota, “rules are rules” and without making a copy, no test drive (or even simply access to the interior of the car) could be allowed. I thanked my salesperson for his time, shook his hand and left. Yorkdale Toyota, because of your inflexibility, you lost a very easy sale tonight. I’ll be buying my car(s) elsewhere, now and in the future. More

Peter, the manager of the used car lot, was enthusiastic. I feel I paid a fair price for the vehicle as I had been researching this purchase for some time. He, their manager Nick and their business person Simona, were so patient explaining to us different options and payment terms without instilling any pressure. They tried their best to deliver the car we really like as per colour and trim, and also within timeline we requested. Going in to buy a 2010 Corolla. Pleaseant at first but I had an accident with my beloved Honda Civic. After several phone calls dealing with a car insurance company the last thing on my mind was to buy a car. Knowing I was short on time I reluctantly went out looking for a car. I checked in first with Yorkdale Toyota. Upon walking in I meet a friendly face. Sales associate Stan (The friendly Russian). He was pleasant to deal with. We took a test drive and I was ready to talk about purchasing. I advice Stan I was not ready to buy that day. I had not yet negotiated the settlement for my car with the insurance company. I was going to buy a car that week. He understood. He was ready to work with me. Unfortunately Stan's manager (Peter) was called upon to help with the deal. After negotiating the price we came to a stand still. He would not budge. I would not budge. This was the first attempt of the day. I said I was going to check and compare elsewhere. I decided to leave. Before I left Peter says, "This deal lasts today only". Really? He also tells me that his deal will be the best deal of the city. Arrogant? Yup. So? I left. For the next 2 days this bothered me. I got 1-2 calls each day from Stan to come back. I felt bad for Stan, he has to work with Peter. I found my way to "Toyota on the Park". Leslie and Eglinton. Upon walking in I got a friendly reception. Talked with Sales associate Eugene. Took a car for a test drive. Negotiated and bought a car the same day. Huge difference in service between these 2 dealerships. A lesson for me to remember is never judge a dealership by the actions of one person. My bonus was the deal I got from Eugene. There was a mutal respect and it was a better deal than Peter's offer. My persistence paid off. The thing that made me uneasy was "the deal was off the table" if I left. I don't know how many years Peter has with sales but that is a bully tactic. It might work on some, but it does not work on me. More
