We are very happy with the 2023 Ford Escape we purchased. It is a significant upgrade for us, has very low kilometres, and drove beautifully. Unfortunately, the process of completing the transaction was far more challenging than it needed to be. This was largely a remote deal completed by phone and text. We provided the requested information and photos of our 2013 Escape before travelling by ferry to the dealership. Once we arrived, test-drove the vehicle, and were ready to complete the purchase, we were suddenly told that our trade was in “really bad shape” and worth only about $3,500 to a wholesaler. The concerns raised were normal wear and tear for a well-maintained, 13-year-old vehicle with 118,000 kilometres: some minor cracking on the side of the leather driver’s seat, a small scratch on the rear quarter panel, and a very minor ding. The seat was described as having a “huge rip,” which was simply not accurate. We were then told that we had failed to disclose significant body damage (1 1 cm scratch and a ding the size of your pinky finger tip), leaving us feeling as though we were being accused of dishonesty. Had the dealership required a video or FaceTime walkthrough before agreeing on the trade value, it should have requested one. We provided the information asked of us and negotiated in good faith. At the same time, some details about the vehicle we were purchasing had not been disclosed to us, including a missing second key fob, which cost us $500 to replace, and several rock chips on the hood. We understand that both vehicles were used and neither was expected to be perfect. That same reasonable standard should have been applied to both sides of the transaction. The situation reached the point where I said we were prepared to leave (We travelled by ferry to get here so walking away wasn't as simple as just going home). I had to remind the salesperson that we were both buying used vehicles and that everyone needed to be realistic. We eventually worked through the trade issue, but the approach felt unnecessarily confrontational and left both my wife and me feeling uncomfortable. Our former vehicle is now advertised on the dealership’s website for approximately $12,000. I fully understand that an advertised retail price is not the same as a trade-in value and that the dealership will have costs and needs to make a profit. However, seeing it listed at that price makes the claim that it was worth only $3,500 and was essentially in terrible condition, even more frustrating. I am not suggesting that the salesperson is a bad person, but the sales tactics used during the trade discussion were disappointing. Making customers feel ashamed of their vehicle or accused of being dishonest is not a good way to earn trust or repeat business. The business manager, however, was fantastic. He was professional, personable, and helped ensure that the final portion of the transaction ended on a much more positive note. Overall, we are very happy with our new-to-us Escape, but our feelings about the purchasing experience are mixed. A transaction involving this much money should leave customers feeling excited and respected—not as though they have been treated like dishonest people. More
