Hi Leah. I hope your A/C problems are well behind you now. Just thought I had better clarify that all work that goes into the shop is initially the customer’s responsibility, and needs to be authorized by the customer before we start work. If the repairs are covered under warranty, then the costs of diagnosis are also covered by warranty. In your case, however, the warranty had long expired, and the costs of the diagnosis and repair would have been your responsibility regardless of the cause of the leak in the A/C condenser. In some cases outside repairs can appear to be cheaper, but proper quotes are, as a rule, comprehensive and will include all charges to be borne by the customer. In addition, we have factory trained technicians working in a state-of-the art facility, and we use OEM (factory) parts whenever possible. In addition we offer, as a minimum, one year warranty on both the parts and the labour, which I suspect you would agree is of value.

We are sorry to hear about any miscommunication during your service visit. In general, auto repairs follow a two-step process, diagnosis followed by repair. Initially guests authorize diagnosis charges, and once the diagnosis is complete the customer is told what it would cost to repair the vehicle, including parts and labour. If the guest authorizes repairs, then we go ahead with repairs. Rarely do we deviate from that procedure, and when we do it is only because the customer has given pre-authorization. For example, some of our long-time customers ask their service advisor to make decisions about air filters, and other routine maintenance items. However, as I mentioned this is a rare exception and only done when explicitly requested. Additionally, our service advisors go over the final bill with the guest when the guest is being notified that the vehicle is ready. At that point any questions about taxes, shop supply fees, warranty, and final charges are answered. If that did not happen in your case I would like you to call me at the SMP service department. Please ask for Michael, the Customer Service Representative. If there are any outstanding issues, I am confident they can be resolved.

We apologize for any miscommunication. Your charges were reviewed and found to be correct. The industry standard is to charge a small fee for shop supplies. It is based on the labour amount, and it covers consumables and incidentals. In addition, SMP has set a very modest maximum above which shop fees do not exceed.
