I called them to buy a 2017 Toyota Corolla, explained that I needed to buy and ship the vehicle for my son in NY but we lived in MA and the vehicle would be registered in MA, made a credit card deposit that I needed to buy and ship the vehicle for my son in NY but we lived in MA and the vehicle would be registered in MA, made a credit card deposit on the phone, and had the car inspected by their recommended 3rd party inspector. However, they refused to process the vehicle for purchase and shipment to NY because they said and I quote ' I was trying to trick them into shipping the car to someone who is not on the contract' The only way they could do it was if I physically signed the purchase agreement. We went back and forth about this for 2 weeks because one person would tell me the car is ready for pick up and the other it's not processed and that I needed to go sign the docs. My thinking was in 2022, with all the technology and having processed my mortgage online with secure links and docu sign, It would have saved me a lot of time and 'money' to complete the purchase online. A little due diligence like actually running my credit to know what kind of person I was would have been sufficient? But no they did not. In fact, on one occasion one of the employees called to tell me that my SSN was incorrect and it shows zero credit history? Amazing.. remember the deposit was taken off a credit card! Anyways long story short, we ended up spending 12 hours on the road just to sign the purchase agreement. They did ship the vehicle to NY the next day. When I complained to the personnel, they told me that the salesperson on the phone was not 'authorized" to discuss the process of purchasing from out of state. And that it was a requirement to drive over to have the docs physically signed. This is however contrary to their commercials which say you can buy online and you do not have to go to them for they purchase? My question is, Should the salesperson have known at the time that I needed to drive to NJ to sign docs? If he had told me that at the time I made inquiries and made the deposit, I would never have bothered to buy the vehicle. How would I as a customer know who is authorized to talk about the process and who is not? I thought the salesperson represented the company and was knowledgeable about the purchase process. Should you be training your employees? Anyways, 2 weeks after my son got the vehicle, we are still chasing the title to have the vehicle registered. Ann More
