They were able to fit in an emergency service (hence the 1 star) but it came at a cost. I have had two experiences with their service department and both have costed substantially more than originally quote 1 star) but it came at a cost. I have had two experiences with their service department and both have costed substantially more than originally quoted. The labour charges are astronomical in comparison to the physical parts. $700 on parts, and over $2,500 in labour for one service and I had to call 4 times in one day to receive one call back from my service manager as well. Finally, they would not let me take my vehicle back over the weekend because I would "lose my place in line" and suggested I rent one from their rental car partner at my own cost. More
Back story- I recently purchased a 2021 MINI from Grand River BMW Mini in November 2021. During my purchase, I received free oil changes with part of my purchase/warranty and had received/got the servi River BMW Mini in November 2021. During my purchase, I received free oil changes with part of my purchase/warranty and had received/got the service done for 2 thus far >>I believe they were free since I did not have a charge when I got the work done. A notification came up on my screen in September "front brake pads" and another "oil change". ** with just under 26,000 km. I emailed AND called Grand River Mini Service and asked for a quote for the front brake pads ** that was what my screen was indicating. ( which actually means front brake work not just pads). In my opinion this is where things went sideways. I received a first quote $1219.01 (S.K), then i got a 2nd quote for $1069.03 (N.S) then a third for $861.55 (M.D) all quotes with in a 24 hours period. I then asked for a clear explanation how the quotes could have such a variance. Grand River Mini emailed me back with the summary details, the break down of parts/labor and taxes, and I could clearly see how the third and final quote was so much cheaper than the initial, upwards of $400 and then, suddenly, after two quotes they informed me "if I get the work done there, I would get a discount" WOW I thought, great a discount!! SIDE BAR- On the third quote, they also sent a quote for the rear brake work , I was like "oh no do I need my rears done too" and they said no, no, its just for the future. At this point I was baffled at how there could be such a variance. Was it really as simple as a discount....even looking at the breakdown I was still confused. Because I am out of town, I thought what to do? I will swing by and just see our local mechanic, talk to him about it, and ask what would charge and if he could do was was required. He was as shocked and confused at the variance in prices, but he did explain to me this is how dealers "sometimes" need to operate, sure they have high volume but more costs. OK so, granted the last quote was "somewhat" reasonable, i guess?? ( front brakes, after all, it is a MINI- part of the BMW family - and I knew what I was getting into with the possibility of higher prices in parts/repairs/maintenance when the time came and was /am fully prepared for that being a different brand than I previously had). Nevertheless, because of the distance and the quotes being off so much, and how that made me feel, only offering this discount in the end. It left me feeling flat and unsettled. What if I just went with the first quote? What if I didn't inquire further? What do I know.. it is what it is? Get the work done and pay the man and carry on, right? This was a month ago, and I wasn't going to write a review because at the time I was really upset, How can the variances be, What if i never inquired past the first one, Are these guys messing with me? Overthinking likely. I calmed myself down and I decided to let it go ...thinking this is never a good time to write a review. In the end, I decided to go with our local mechanic, saved the time on travel, got the work done for less- same work same parts and peace of mind. But then this week, I received a notification from Grand River MINI in my email that there was an appointment made for me to get brake work and an oil change ( an appointment I never made ????) I thought oh gee, am I going to get charged for this- you know like when you miss a dentist appointment sometimes they charge you ) so I cancelled it as best I could. Now that time has past, I thought a review is the way to go. In my opinion, This is what reviews are for.......to help people when they are looking to make a decision on things. Good / Bad/ Indifferent. In my opinion, this is precisely why sometimes getting service done at a dealership leaves people feeling unsettled. In my opinion sometimes this is why you have to find a mechanic that you "trust", If you are lucky enough, one that explains everything to you, educates you, for those of us who are not car people, those of us who have no idea how much these things cost/labor parts etc. At the end of the day I do so love my MINI and will likely stay on my path..... stay with this brand....understanding full in well I need to keep my regular scheduled maintenance up to date to ensure the remaining warranty holds. Unfortunately, my services, my maintenance, free or not............ will not be done at Grand River Mini. More
