I decided to finally buy an electric car, a 2023 Kia EV6, and ALM Kia South had one used with only 3400 miles on it but with a "buyback" title. I rarely deal with car dealerships as a rule because my experie and ALM Kia South had one used with only 3400 miles on it but with a "buyback" title. I rarely deal with car dealerships as a rule because my experience has never been good. As it turns out, ALM Kia South did a great job at fulfilling all those bad expectations. In Georgia, consumer law states that dealerships cannot charge any doc fee or dealer add-ons on top of the "selling" Price. So you'd think things here would be pretty straightforward in car sales. Sadly, they are not. As it turns out, all dealers in Georgia show a doc fee on their quotes. When I asked to have it removed, my salesperson, Rianna, told me that "it's not added in the price. It's shown on the paper. Most dealerships do it this way." What she meant was that the advertised price (say, $10K) includes the doc fee, but they just show it in the quote. This point was not clear to me - I mean - why have it in there if it's all inclusive. It would be like buying a cake for $10, but the receipt says $8 for cake and $2 for frosting. It's confusing - and I think it's meant to be that way. Anyhow, when I kept asking to have the charge removed, she said I didn't have to buy the car from them... Huh? What kind of customer service was this? Turning away tens of thousands of dollars of business over a few hundred dollars is a very weird concept. Anyhow, when she continued to discourage me, I called the branch manager (Richard, I think). Then I got a very upset call from Rianna's sales manager, Jamal, who said I was b**ching about the price of the car after they reduced it and gave me a good deal on my trade-in. I had to calm him down by saying I wasn't trying to be difficult but just wanted a fair shake when buying my car. As to the point about the doc fees, he's the one who better explained (after he calmed down) about how they are structured in GA. So I relented once he pointed out that he was selling the car to me $2k below the advertised price with the doc fee included. That part was unpleasant, but ok, I thought. I told Jamal that I wanted the rest of the process to run smoothly without any gotchas when I came in to pick up my car. I planned to finance it, and the calculator on the page for the car listing showed that someone with my credit score (which was over 800) would get a 3.99% rate even though the car was used and a manufacturer's buyback. I mistakenly assumed that finance would be with Kia since they were providing a straightforward rate. I asked about that rate and sent the screenshot of the rate to him and to Rianna, he said it would be "fine". Needless to say it was anything but. When I applied for credit, they said that the rate would be 6.41%. What? I was pretty upset by that (one of those gotchas I didn't want). I asked him why his website showed such a low rate, and he said, "Well, there was a button you could have clicked on to get an actual rate." WTH. They put some low xx rate to reel people in - so underhanded! Then when I'm in the dealership waiting for the loan paperwork to be completed, I get told that the 6.41% rate was off the table because the car was a "buyback" title. Apparently, few banks provide loans for buybacks - news to me. Only one was willing to loan me the money... at 7.24% - ugh. Jamal seemed as surprised as me, which didn't fill me with any confidence. So thanks to their inability to be transparent or well informed, I ended up paying another $100 per month on my loan. Then as a final dgaf act from Rianna, I asked if I could get a level 1 charging cable for the car, and she showed me the V2L adapter and told me this could charge the car. As I found out, it cannot, but hey, what did I know, this was my first electric car. They were just saying whatever they needed to in order to get me out the door. So overall, a terrible experience with bad communicators, deceptive practices, bait and switch tactics, and insulting customer service. Go there at your own risk! More
